What it is
An answer surface is any place where an answer about your company is rendered to someone who never visits your website. Chat assistants, AI summaries above search results, in-product copilots and third-party comparison pages all qualify. They differ in audience and format but share one structural property: you supply the source material and somebody else controls the rendering.
Why it matters
That property changes the governance problem. On your own site a wrong claim can be edited at the point of display; on an answer surface it can only be corrected at the record, and then only once the surface re-reads it. This makes the accuracy of the underlying claim the entire lever — there is no equivalent of a hotfix on a page you do not own.
